Abstract:

Quality of life information is important to Virginia's economic growth. Locations and proximity information of private schools is now available. This information represents the locations of private schools, or independent schools throughout Virginia. These schools are defined by not being administered by local, state, or national government, whom retain the right to select their student body and are funded in whole or in part by charging their students tuition rather than with public (state) funds. The information includes those schools open for the school year 2003-2004.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data is to provide a geographic representation of the location of the private schools in Virginia.

Accuracy of the digitization and attributes was originally tested by using lists provided by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Virginia Council for Private Education, geocoded using street addresses, and then confirmed using the 2006 VBMP aerial imagery and Google maps.
