Abstract:
This data set contains the locations of medical facilities throughout Virginia. The orginal data set was obtained from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP). The VEDP data set was created using 7.5 minute USGS digital raster graphic imagery (DRGs), then quality assurance checked with Planning District Commission GIS representatives. The 2002 update rechecked the position of the facility through DOQQ's, DRG's, SPOT 2000, and True color imagery as well as a shapefile from VDH. The 2005 update checked facility positions through the 2002 Virginia Base Mapping Program True color imagery as well as a shapefile from VDH and each hospital's website. In August 2006 the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) modified the data by adding additional medical facilities and information. The additional medical facilities were added using each hospital's website and the 2002 Virginia Base Mapping Program True color imagery via hand digitizing. Additional information on the locations were obtained from internet mapping systems and the facility's website directions and diagrams.
Purpose:
The purpose of this data is to provide a geographic representation of the location of each acute care hospital, selected other hospitals and medical facilities in Virginia for use in emergency and response planning. This file is not inclusive of all the medical facilities in Virginia, but contains the facilities that are regulary monitored by VDH. This file includes medical, behavioral, rehabilitation, specialty, hospice, and poison centers.

The site location of each hopsital was digitized using SPOT 2000, USGS Digitial Orthophotos, USGS Digital Raster Graphics, Aerials Express True Color Digital Orthophotos, and Virginia Base Mapping Program True Color Digital Orthophotos. The digitized point was chosen based upon the center of the facility. The projection of the digitized data set is in Lambert Conformal Conic, allowing use of this information with other VEDP coverages. The most recent digitizing was done using ArcGIS 9.0.
