Abstract:

A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical disabilities. Adults 18 or older can stay in a skilled nursing facility to receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. The availability of nursing homes can serve as a quality of life indicator for economic development purposes. All nursing homes in the United States that receive Medicare and/or Medicaid funding are subject to federal regulations.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to show locations of nursing home facilities throughout Virginia.

Supplemental_Information:

The nursing homes represented by this dataset are those included in the Nursing Home Compare database downloaded from www.medicare.gov in August 2007. Other sources for this type of data include the Virginia Depratment of Health facilities directory from the Office of Licensure and Certification, the Virginia Health Institute, and the Virginia Department on Aging. Only the information form Medicare was used to create this GIS dataset as it was believed to be the most complete at the time of creation.

The facility information is believed to be as complete as possible based upon information obtained from the Medicare.gov web pages and dowloadable database and from information obtained from the facilities themselves.

Facility locations were geocoded using centerline geocoding when available. This result was later refined by moving the points to the appropriate buildings as identified on locality GIS mapping sites, or via centerline address range refinement. Since most nursing homes are shaped as a cross or "H", it is relatively easy to identify which building in a given address range is most likely to be the nursing home.
