Abstract:
The data contained in this shapefile are derived from hardcopy maps or digital data provided by local and regional economic development organizations to the Sites and Buildings Program, Research Division, of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. The locations of the properties are heads-up digitized from the hardcopy maps using high resolution Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP) aerial photography and USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) images. The existing digital data are imported into the existing VEDP dataset and then checked against the VBMP aerials and DRGs. Only those properties that are considered available for industrial or office use are digitized. This dataset contains point locations for industrial and office buildings and representative points for industrial sites. For polygon outlines of industrial sites, see the "Available Industrial Sites in Virginia" shapefile available at <http://gis.vedp.org>. The data is updated on an ongoing basis, as new sites are submitted by local and regional economic development organizations.
Purpose:
The purpose of this data is to provide a geographic representation of the location of each available industrial and office property in the Commonwealth as submitted to VEDP by local and regional economic development organizations. This data combined with infrastructure, utility, environmental sensitivity, labor, demographics and quality of life information are used to select properties for industrial or office use based on a prospect's needs.

Representative point locations for each industrial site polygon were created and combined with building point locations to create a new layer called "property points." These points represent all available properties in the Commonwealth. Site boundary polygons are still maintained. The points for sites and buildings are located or verified using the VBMP aerial photography and DRGs. The data are edited using ArcGIS 9.2 and are stored in a versioned geodatabase in ArcSDE. Industrial buildings, office buildings, and site points can be queried out using an available attribute field named "Type."
