The data contained in this shapefile are derived from hardcopy maps or existing digital data provided by local and regional economic development organizations to the Sites and Buildings Program, Research Division, of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. The boundaries of the sites are heads-up digitized from the hardcopy maps using high resolution Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP) aerial photography and USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) images. The existing digital data are imported into the existing VEDP dataset and then checked against the VBMP aerials and DRGs. Only those sites that are considered available for industrial development are digitized. The data is updated on an ongoing basis, as new sites are submitted by local and regional economic development organizations.
- Purpose:

The purpose of this data is to provide a geographic representation of the location of each available industrial site boundary in the Commonwealth as submitted to VEDP by local and regional economic development organizations. This data combined with infrastructure, utility, environmental sensitivity, labor, demographics and quality of life information are used to select sites for industrial development based on a prospect's needs.
