Abstract:
Fire station, rescue station and fire and rescue station locations may be used in conjuction with other quality of life data to create information packages for use in economic development. This information is important to potential new businesses for identifying the responding fire, rescue or fire and rescue stations for both the site of the business and for potential employee habituation. This data set was created in conjunction with the Department of Emergency Services. The Department of Emergency Services contacted individual localities and had them send the fire response district data to VEDP. Data was received in ESRI shapefile formats, ArcInfo export file format, CAD file format and as hard copy maps which were digitized in ArcGIS.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to provide a geographic representation of the location of each fire, rescue and fire and rescue station location in the state of Virginia. This data, combined with infrastructure, utility, environmental sensitivity, labor, demographics and quality of life data are used to select sites and buildings for industrial development based on a prospect's needs.

Fire station, rescue station and fire and rescue station locations were digitzed from hard copy data sources on top of USGS DRGs. Quality assurance check maps will be made on top of DRGs and sent to PDCs for quality checks.

Individual localities and Planning District Commissions sent hard copy maps, ArcInfo export files, shapefiles or CAD files with fire station, rescue station and fire and rescue station locations indicated. Hard copy maps were digitized in ArcGIS 8.1 on top of USGS DRGs. ArcInfo export files, shapefiles and CAD files were imported into ArcSDE shapefiles, reprojected into the Partnership's projection and put into the fire and rescue station coverage.
