Description:

Abstract:: Virginia cities, counties and towns have the ability to establish, by ordinance, one or more technology zones to attract growth in targeted industries. Qualified businesses locating or expanding operations in a zone may receive local permit and user fee waivers, local tax incentives, special zoning treatment or exemption from ordinances. Once a local technology zone has been established, incentives may be provided for up to ten years. Each locality designs and administers its own program. Localities that have established technology zones include Arlington, Roanoke, Rockingham, Russell and Smyth Counties, the cities of Charlottesville, Falls Church, Franklin, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg and Winchester, and the towns of Front Royal in Warren County and Kilmarnock in Lancaster County. In addition, the City of Virginia Beach has an approved technology zone ordinance, but has not yet designated a zone. state_techzones was digitized using hardcopy paper maps or verbal boundary descriptions provided by the localities. Boundaries were identified using vbmp imagery and VDOT centerline data, 2005.
Purpose:: The purpose of state_techzones is to illustrate the economic incentive provided by these regions to businesses contemplating expanding or relocating to Virginia.
